Dear ladies and "gentlemen", your participation to my 30th birthday is the only gift I ask for. In case you feel like doing more, I would like us all to gather funds for The Orangutan Project via this collection. Proceeds will be devolved towards protecting the precious habitat of this critically endangered species in Indonesia. Funds will help security rangers protect the area from poachers and other dangers, as well as help monitor and rehabilitate injured ones. Background:A century ago there were more than 230,000 orangutans between Borneo, Sumatra and Tapanuli. Their population has more than halved over the last 60 years and their habitat reduced by at least 55% over the past 20 years. All three species of orangutan are critically endangered. The situation is critical.Estimates show that 50 to 70% of Indonesian and Malaysian rainforests have been destroyed to accommodate illegal logging and unsustainable forms of agricolture, such as palm oil and pulp paper (do not buy ANY product with palm oil!). The two countries have amongst the worst deforestation rates globally.
Orangutans share 97% of their DNA with humans (probably close to 100% for some of you ungrateful apes). Orang-utan literally means "people of the forest" and they are amongst the most intelligent beings on the planet after humans. They adapt to the environment by passing on culture through each generation. They are a self-aware being, as intelligent as a six year old child, and are being driven to extinction through habitat loss, poaching as well as being literally macheted and burnt alive as an agricultural pest. This world is an unfair place. Let's make it a bit better?
